Isthmus Closed

David Stevenson

The Isthmus split the world's largest ocean in two. Like a closing door, it stopped the current between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The current turned north along the eastern coast of North America. Today we call this current the Gulf Stream.
The Gulf Stream is a strong, warm current. “The Gulf Stream stopped the sea from freezing along the coast of Northern Europe. It probably formed the system of currents that joins the world's oceans,” says Tony. “The Gulf Stream changed Earth's climates and the way the world works.”
