Human Sacrifice
The Maya ball  game was played for both recreation and as a religious ritual. Prisoners, occasionally rulers of conquered city-states, were forced to play, sometimes against the triumphant king. Players directed the heavy rubber ball with stone blades, or hachas, worn in yokes around their waists. This hacha depicts a vanquished ball player ready for sacrifice.
