Costumes are important in understanding the iconography of Maya art. Justin's sharp shadows emphasize the clothing and grimace of this funerary figure which may have been placed in a tomb between 700-900 AD. The feathered bird costume may indicate that he was interred with the deceased to represent a sacrificial victim. For more information, see The Blood of Kings, p. 223.
